I strive to show my students films that they will find personally meaningful, while at the same time exposing them to material that might not otherwise appear in their Netflix queue. We concentrate on documentaries created in the United States but also look at international co-productions and films whose topics move across national borders. Do we organize the semester by genre? Major movements? Filmmaker? We forgo a chronological examination of epochs or modes of production and instead investigate case studies associated with particular themes. The class aims to equip students to not simply become more savvy and curious consumers of documentary, but to feel more empowered to analyze, talk back and contribute to the broader media environment.Ĭrafting our syllabus poses challenges. In my course, Contemporary Documentary Media, students from the production track, humanities and social sciences learn about the central place of nonfiction within our current screen culture, as well as the ways it can be used both as a means of personal and collective expression and as a tool for progressive change. ![]() ![]() Although these are quite different contexts, teaching the class at a liberal arts college in the South and at a large research university in the Northeast feels equally urgent. My pursuits eventually led me towards a book project that explores documentary film and television in Los Angeles during the 1960s and ’70s, as well as numerous iterations of a contemporary documentary seminar I teach as a professor at Hendrix College near Little Rock, Arkansas, and as a member of Summer Session faculty at Columbia University in New York City. However, my experience tells me that students' enthusiasm for documentary stems more from a desire to engage with the sociopolitical reality that surrounds them-one filled with great hope and anxiety.Ī graduate school seminar on Errol Morris first sparked my interest in documentary and its intersections with politics, cultural history and the public humanities. And streaming services such as Netflix, Amazon, and SnagFilms have made it easier than ever to watch a wide variety of nonfiction. Why? Certainly, "documenting" their lives via Instagram and Snapchat is a popular social ritual. Student interest in college courses focusing on documentary media has never been higher.

OpenDNS routes your DNS queries through their servers and compares what you’re looking for with their advanced filtering system. If someone thinks that an Internet monitoring program is installed on the home PC and they try to use their iPad to surf something inappropriate, OpenDNS is going to catch it, log it, and stop it immediately. The benefit of controlling DNS on your network is you can set your home router to use a certain DNS server and anyone on your network is going to be forced to go through this service enter OpenDNS. The DNS system is much like a phonebook of the Internet, when you type a domain name it can look it up and send you to the correct location. This way, you don’t have to remember the IP address of this site, but you can use a name instead. Basically what this means is when you type DNS translates that URL () to the IP address of the server this website is hosted on. DNS (or Domain Name System) is what translates every website and web-based service from a Universal Resource Locator (URL) to an Internet Protocol (IP) Address. The solution is to control the DNS of your network. This will make anyone trying to access something inappropriate on your network to have to go somewhere else to get it. The way to stop any device on your network from accessing inappropriate material is to control the entire network, not just one computer. Courtesy of Īs a law enforcement officer, I dealt with plenty of cases of children getting into areas online they had no business being in and sometimes the results were devastating. The biggest obstacle now with software applications that just install on a single computer is that if a user accesses the Internet from another device (e.g., Tablet, Laptop, Netbook, Smart Phone, MP3 player), the software application will not catch any of this activity. Ten years ago, this kind of solution worked well because most people didn’t have many computers in their home and certainly didn’t have WiFi capable devices surfing the Internet like what is available now. There are many companies offering free and paid versions of software designed to filter Internet searches, report on Internet activity, and block certain websites.
